UL biology professor Dr. Emilio Garcia has announced a new species of mollusk. The old animal with a new name is Epitonium leali, a puzzling wentletrap that can be found on Sanibel Island, Florida and other Gulf areas.
The University of Louisiana Alumni Association will honor oil executive Kenneth Blanchard Sr. and transplant surgeon Dr. J. Keith Melancon as Outstanding Alumni for 2011. The presentation will coordinate with Homecoming week beginning Oct. 8.
Baton Rouge -- Governor Bobby Jindal unveiled the "Louisiana Plan" to start restoring the state’s coastal areas, fisheries and oyster seed grounds from the devastating impact of the BP oil spill. The state will be submitting a list of projects to BP, the Department of Interior and NOAA, and the funding will come from a $1 billion agreement announced in April 2011 for early restoration of damaged natural resources resulting from the oil spill.
RESTON, VA – Grants by UL faculty members Suzanne Fredericq and Joseph Neigel have been funded as part of 17 grants totaling $1.5 million from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GRI) Research Board. Alexandria LA -- The Louisiana Wildlife Federation honored UL alumnus and Louisiana Department Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Biologist Director Michael Carloss as a 2010 Conservation Achievement Award winner on March 19 at the federation’s annual convention in Alexandria. Carloss oversaw important wetlands mitigation after the oil spill, and received national attention for his work rescuing Louisiana's iconic brown pelicans from the contamination.
